Smoking careers and experiences with smoking cessation

The Tabatraj survey, conducted with approximately 70 participants who have recently quit smoking revealed that there are various and accumulative reasons for giving it up. Over time, smokers make several attempts to stop, and adjust their chosen cessation strategies

Different approaches to cessation strategies

The strategies chosen in aid of quitting vary depending on people’s social backgrounds and their available resources. They tend to become more complex as the number of attempts to quit increases.

In the workplace, smoking is often linked to social interaction and work-related constraints, which makes it difficult to quit. The study also confirms the major influence of the family (partner, children) on the cessation process.

Is consumption withdrawal an end in itself?

In addition, once consumption is stopped, it is not necessarily a given for participants to consider themselves as non-smokers, especially when they have made numerous attempts to stop, or still enjoy the substance. “Reformed smoker”, “non-smoker but tobacco addict”, or even “lifelong smoker”, there is a wide spectrum of classifications when it comes to cessation, based on what is considered irreversible.
