This report from the French Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (OFDT) provides an overview of the supply, uses, and the social and health consequences of alcohol consumption in France in 2024.

  • The volume of pure alcohol sold declined again in 2024 (down 5.8% compared to 2023), standing at 9.75 litres of pure alcohol per capita.
  • In 2024, over half of all alcoholic beverages sold were wines (52%), well ahead of beers and spirits.
  • According to the 2024 European School Survey on Alcohol and other Drugs (ESPAD) conducted by the OFDT, alcohol use among 16-year-old French individuals has declined and is now below the European average.
  • According to the 2023 survey conducted by the OFDT on representations, opinions and perceptions regarding psychoactive drugs (EROPP), all indicators of alcohol use among adults remain high despite a downward trend.
  • Alcohol-related hospital admissions to medical, surgical, obstetric and dental units increased in 2024, with 614 076 inpatient stays involving 316 950 people. Admissions for acute alcohol intoxication have been declining for a decade, in contrast to those related to alcohol dependence.
